Yesterday, Oppo unveiled its unique concept device with a roll-up display called the X 2021. Its 6.7 ”panel can stretch up to 7.4” when needed. While the company did not announce who was behind the manufacture of the OLED screen, a senior BOE executive stepped up and revealed that his company manufactured the single screen.
Yuan Feng is BOE vice president and responded to a random blogger on Weibo that the display company is behind the development of the technology. In order to create a seamless transition and “no crease” panel, BOE provided Oppo with the technical expertise for zone stacking of frames to make rolling and stretching appear as natural as possible.
Beyond the panel, everything is still Oppo’s work, from the dual motors that retract and extend to the way the user interface reacts to the change of format. Chinese sources say that Oppo’s ultimate goal is for smartphones to be manually stretched so that people can adjust their own diagonal instead of having just two options like now, either 6.7 ”or 7.4”.
