The number of COVID-19 infections in Africa surpassed the 2.49 million mark on Sunday, as the continent continues to see a steady increase in its number of cases.
According to the latest data from the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of confirmed cases in Africa stood at 2,490,397 on Sunday with a death toll of 58,762.
South Africa remains the most affected country on the continent by the pandemic, with 912,477 cases and 24,539 deaths.
The country accounts for 36.64 percent of COVID-19 cases in Africa and 41.76 percent of its deaths.
The number of cases from South Africa is more than double the second highest number of cases reported by Morocco.
The North African country has recorded 415,226 confirmed cases and 6,909 deaths.
Apart from the two, the only other African countries that have reported more than 100,000 COVID-19 infections are Egypt (124,891), Ethiopia (119,494), and Tunisia (119,151).
A total of 10 countries on the continent have registered more than 1,000 deaths related to COVID-19.
Data from the CDC of Africa also showed that 2,094,336 patients had successfully recovered from the disease.
