The new Mercedes-AMG E63 hits 186 MPH like nothing on the highway

The updated Mercedes-AMG E63 has arrived in Germany, bringing with it some juicy cosmetic updates. The performance of the V8 remains unchanged, but we still wanted to test what the car is capable of on the legendary Autobahn.
What we like most about the new E63 is the interior. It borrows most of the advantages of the new S-Class and packs them with carbon fiber trim. The highlight is the steering wheel, with buttons built into slim black spokes and small driving mode displays.

There was nothing wrong with the appearance of the previous model, so Mercedes did not go crazy in the exterior department. But look closely and you’ll notice the new headlights, wider brake lights, and a AMG grid.

As we already said, the E63 S has the same power output. More specifically, the 4.0-liter twin-turbo generates 603 hp (612 PS) across all wheels via a revised 9-speed Speedshift transmission, which now features a wet-start clutch instead of a torque converter.

You can still get it with the base 563-hp engine, but the S model is the focus of this high-speed highway performance test. The first to be timed is the sprint from 0 to 62 mph (100 km / h), which takes just under the officially claimed 3.4 seconds.

After that, we learn that going from 62 to 124 mph (100 to 200 km / h) takes 7.7 seconds. The Automann-TV reviewer says this makes the E63 S faster than the Audi RS6, which is fully expected. Even the RS7 could lose in this type of sprint. Something tells us that they are not going to do it like this for much longer in Germany.

And lastly, we enjoy watching the 600-plus-hp sedan hit 300 km / h (186 mph) with ease. That kind of speed on the highway would put you on national television in America, but it’s completely legal in Germany. Heck, it even seems relatively safe.
