Security authorities in Ethiopia’s Oromo region reportedly said that the leader of the military wing of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) was killed in the Qelem district of the Wollega region.
According to a report by Ahadu Radio and Television, Kumsa Driba (Jal Mero) died from a gunshot wound he received in one of the last military operations in the region.
The Qelem District Police Inspector, Inspector Zelalem Nememsa, is said to have confirmed that the rebel leader is dead.
Some 103 bodyguards were also reportedly killed and the district police say they have confirmed this with photographic evidence.
However, the government media did not release video images of the rebel leader. The Federal Police Commission has also not confirmed the story.
Rather, the news provoked skepticism among Ethiopians in the diaspora. News of Jal Mero’s death broke just one day after a brutal massacre in the area that reportedly targeted the Amhara ethnic group.
It is seen as a deliberate propaganda effort to cover up the massacre of the Amhara people in the region.
There has been a recurring massacre of ethnic Amharas in the area where the Jal Mero armed group was operating for more than two years.
