New Zealand’s largest city Auckland will return to a seven-day lockdown after a new coronavirus case emerged.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced the move on Saturday, and officials are still working to identify the origin of the coronavirus in this case, Reuters. reported.
Countries have been closely monitoring variants of the virus from the UK, Africa and Brazil.
Authorities say the patient was infected on Sunday and visited several public places before realizing two days later that he had symptoms.
For the next week, city residents will only be able to go out to buy groceries or perform essential jobs. The rest of the country has level two blockades and will not allow large gatherings.
New Zealand saw a few coronavirus cases earlier this month, with three of the cases being the UK variant of the coronavirus.
There is evidence that the UK variant is more contagious and more deadly than previous variants.
Officials are trying to see if the new case is linked to previous cases.
New Zealand has seen more than 2,000 reported cases and more than 20 deaths from the virus, dramatically lower numbers compared to other countries, and the nation shuts down after new cases emerge.
