The Google Phone app will reportedly change its name and include a new colorful icon

In the last few months, the Google Phone app has been available for non-Pixel devices and we’ve also seen testing for a new Caller ID advertisement feature. In the midst of all the changes, Google is apparently working on renaming the app as well.

According to a post on Reddit (via ChromeUnboxed), the Google Phone app may be renamed to Google Call, with a new multi-colored icon to launch. The renamed app was apparently seen in an advertisement on YouTube. The ad itself touts the phone app’s ability to reliably inform users that they are calling.

The ad included a link to the Phone by Google app on Google Play.

For better or worse, some of Google’s most important services have undergone an overhaul this year. Google Suite was renamed Google Workspace to serve more business customers and work from home. More importantly, however, many of the company’s most recognizable icons, including Gmail and Google Calendar, were completely redesigned. The Google Call phone icon will apparently have the same multicolored design.

The YouTube ad for Google Call included a link to the Phone by Google app on Google Play. The current listing still features the old phone icon with no other visible rebranding.

It is not clear when Google Phone will become Google Call or if it was just a mistake. Either way, the Google Phone app has been getting a lot of really good features over the past few years, from the call screen to Wait for me and improved spam protection.

Once the rebrand is official, we’ll make sure to let you know.
