The ‘Godfall’ PS5 reviews are pouring in, and they’re not amazing

The day before the PS5’s launch, the embargo on one of its highest-profile exclusive consoles was lifted, and so far at least, the reviews aren’t looking so good for Godfall.

Godfall is currently stuck at a 62 on Metacritic, with the caveat that it is only based on six rated reviews, and other major outlets like Game Informer and IGN have their reviews unrated or still “in progress.” Although the wording of many of those reviews is not the most positive.

Godfall’s current 61 is well below Spider-Man: Miles Morales’s 85, and has always been somewhat unknown in this release window with a new IP and a “looter slasher” concept published by Borderlands’ Gearbox, but developed by Duelyst’s Counterplay Games. .

The most common complaints are about repetitive missions and dungeon crawling, and a flat, uninspired story. Everyone was holding their breath to see if this could be the next Warframe or Diablo, or another Anthem or Avengers instead. It’s too early to tell, but again, these early indicators don’t look good. Anthem had a Metascore of 54, and Avengers, most recently, scored a 67, probably higher at the back of its surprisingly cool story campaign.

Where are my thoughts on Godfall? I mean, I’m the looter type, right? Well, Counterplay was kind enough to give me a PS5 code early. The problem is, I never ended up getting an early PS5, and the ones I bought won’t be here until a few days after launch. I think I’ll get some PC code soon and I might jump there to start, but in short, it will take a while before I can express coherent thoughts.

But you know me, I’m the guy who put in 100 hours on both Anthem and Avengers at least, so you know I’ll fully execute it by the time I decide to stick with it long-term or quit. Supposedly, Godfall’s PS exclusivity may end in six months, but that has yet to be confirmed. Most importantly, I just want to see how it looks and feels on PS5, as only Next-gen non-crossover game (AC Valhalla), an expansion of something next-gen (Miles Morales) or a remake (Demon’s Souls).

Here are some current thoughts from reviewers, and we’ll see what the score does as more reviews come in:

Game informer – “In my day, I’ve enjoyed boss battles and loot, but I’ve gotten bored with the three open-world environments, which are small and don’t have much visual flavor. Everything looks the same, be it the architecture, the rocks, the plants and even the enemies. “

Gamespot – “The first signs are promising, especially with regard to combat. The mission design hasn’t been inspired so far, and each one takes me from fight to fight with little else in between. It remains to be seen if the combat has to bear the burden for the entire game, but it could be up to the task. “

IGN – “As of now, though, I’m enjoying Godfall, even if he’s not doing much to amaze me and the replay of his missions is wearing off a bit. It has fun and satisfying combat, some genuinely novel mechanics, and graphics that range from absolutely beautiful to a bit over the top, but unless its lean story morphs into more than just an excuse to stab things, the grindable looter and action structure doesn’t seem have enough variety to keep your customization expansive. “

Bear with me, I’ll address it soon.
