A UEFA plan to limit the number of clubs that can qualify for the Champions League was set out in a report by the Football Association detailing the possible end of the four main races in the Premier League.
Movements to protect the “sources of income for elite European clubs” are presented in the FA report, which details the plans that the European football governing body has to expand its continental competitions.
The Premier League has long enjoyed a healthy fight for the top four spots in the division and the Champions League standings.
But such plans, which have long been pushed by Juventus president Andrea Agnelli, would threaten top-tier competitiveness and give anyone outside of the so-called ‘Big Six’ little chance of sitting at the table. Europe.
The new plans, which would take effect in 2024, establish that the 32-team Champions League for the 2024/25 season would be chosen based on UEFA’s national club rankings for the period between the 2020/21 and 2023 seasons. / 24, effectively making the tournament a closed store.

For clubs outside that group, entry to future Champions League tournaments would have to happen either by winning the Premier League directly or reaching the semi-finals of a renewed 32-team Europa League.

If the plan were in place this season, such a move would be a blow to the likes of Leicester, Wolves and Sheffield United, who have been battling with more established teams like Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham for a place in the top four.
There are also plans for the Europa League to follow a similar pattern starting in 2024, with new teams able to qualify through league position or finish in the last four of the new UEFA Conference League.
“The FA continues to work with all interested parties to reach an acceptable position,” the report added.
