The casting of Gal Gadot as Cleopatra starts the debate on Twitter about the Israeli actress who plays the Egyptian queen

While many Twitter users stated that it was “not cool” to choose Gal Gadot, others pointed out that Cleopatra was actually Greek-Macedonian.

However, Twitter users were obsessed with something else. Many objected to an Israeli woman playing an Egyptian queen. Twitterati posed a simple question as to why the creators weren’t able to cast an Arab or black woman for the role.

Many pointed out that it was “not right” to choose someone who had been a former soldier in the Israel Defense Forces.

Gadot, like other Israeli men and women, had served in the country’s military and even participated in the 34-day conflict between Lebanon and northern Israel in 2006. However, this Twitter brigade was soon taken down by another. Twitterati group who pointed out that although Cleopatra was the ruler of Egypt, she was not Egyptian. In fact, she was a Macedonian Greek.

Many were of the opinion that people actually had reservations about a Jew playing the part.

Before the 35-year-old star, actors Vivien Leigh and Elizabeth Taylor played Cleopatra on screen.
