Everton’s recruiting summer has apparently marked a shift in transfer policy for the club, with the arrival of Real Madrid’s James Rodríguez in the hopes of inspiring a new era with Carlo Ancelotti.
The Merseyside club endured a hugely disappointing campaign last season with a costly summer transfer window that paid no dividends, Marco Silva’s disappointing tenure came to an end before optimism grew following the appointment of the three-time winner of the Ancelotti Champions League.
An exciting new era has begun with the quintessential signing of Rodríguez from Real Madrid, the Colombian international who was once one of the most expensive players in world football and who previously worked with Ancelotti both in Spain and at Bayern Munich.
The signing of the 29-year-old, along with the capture of Allan from Napoli, indicates a change from Everton’s previously stated transfer policy, Football Director Marcel Brands admitting the club’s intention to avoid signing players ‘greater’
“The players we brought in last year were under 25 years old, so we don’t want to invest a lot of money in older players,” Brands said last year.
“Everton is a club that also has to sell players, so it is necessary to get younger players to invest.

“That’s why we invested in young players last summer. Digne was 24, Mina 23, Richarlison 21, so we looked for players in the age group 20-25, 26 ”.
Brands’ comments came after the success of their season one signings including Richarlison and Digne, the duo established themselves as major figures since moving to Goodison Park.
Last season’s window, however, was a major disappointment with players like Alex Iwobi and Moise Kean particularly poor in their debut seasons at Everton, while Jean-Philippe Gbamin made just one league start in a campaign ruined by a serious injury.
The arrival of Manchester City’s experienced Fabian Delph was also not a success and the club’s mediocre midfield performances have apparently sparked a change in policy, Rodriguez and Allan, both 29, and the Toffees continue their search for 27- Abdoulaye Doucoure , one-year Watford midfielder.
Ancelotti has spoken about the arrival of Everton to Rodríguez, and believes that the playmaker can contribute a lot to his side after being convinced of the ‘project’ at Everton under the Italian’s leadership.
“James, as everyone knows, is a fantastic player with a lot of quality and a lot of ability to provide assists for the forwards,” he told the Everton website.

“He is very excited about the club’s project and the fact that we want to improve. I was very excited to sign and didn’t spend time convincing him, I was already convinced.
“Players like James and Allan can help us to be better and we can help them to be better. This type of connection can be useful to improve the results, the team and the results of this club ”.
Rodriguez agreed to a big pay cut to sign a two-year deal with an option for a third, the 2014 World Cup star possibly making his debut at the weekend against Tottenham Hotspur.
