Efforts have been completed to recover the body of a person who was trapped after the partial collapse of a building in London, Ontario, the city of London said Sunday morning.

The area around 555 Teeple Terrace at the west end of the city had been closed since shortly before noon Friday, when the wall of a four-story building under construction suddenly gave way. The incident killed two people and injured four others.

One person died in the hospital on Friday, shortly after being pulled out of the rubble. Another person, who was also pronounced dead on Friday, had been buried under the rubble until Saturday night, just before midnight, when recovery efforts were completed, city officials said.

All those killed and injured were working on the construction of the four-story apartment building, a project managed by Brock Developments. The Ontario Ministry of Labor is investigating and the company said it is cooperating.

Efforts to remove the victim were delayed because the building was unstable after the collapse and recovery teams were avoiding further injuries.

A private demolition company was called in to help, as parts of the building had to be dismantled until the structure was stable enough for emergency workers to safely retrieve the body.

The recovery was a joint effort that involved the London Police Service, the London Fire Department, the Middlesex-London Paramedic Service and the City of London.

The city said that out of respect for individuals and their families, they will not provide further information on the identities of the victims or the extent of their injuries.

An investigation is underway to determine what caused the collapse, the city said, adding that the scene will remain closed.

Roads around the area had been closed while recovery was taking place. Wonderland Road between Springbank Drive and Commissioners Road has since reopened.
