The African Union Peace and Security Council called on member states to further enhance their cross-border cooperation to deny terrorists and armed groups, criminal networks and traffickers the opportunity to exploit the current situation of COVID-19 to perpetuate its activities. .
The council related this in a statement issued after its virtual meeting held to discuss the impact of the outbreak of the new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on peace and security in Africa on April 14.
Given the nature of the virus and its negative impact on the AU’s peace and security activities, the council underscored the urgent need to mobilize and deploy all necessary efforts, within the spirit of international solidarity, to mitigate, contain and spread COVID of effective way. -19.
After further emphasizing the importance of solidarity among Africans, the Council called on member states to draw lessons from the recent and successful fight against the outbreak of the Ebola virus disease in parts of the continent.
The Council also reiterated the appeal to all belligerents to fully adopt and support the global ceasefire in order to facilitate efforts against the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Council welcomed the establishment of the African Union Response Fund COVID-19 to mobilize the necessary financial resources for Africa’s fight against the pandemic.
The Council also called on bilateral and international development partners to consider debt cancellation and relief to African countries with fragile economies.
The Council paid special tribute to the Prime Minister, Dr. Abiy Ahmed and Mr. Jack Ma, for their personal efforts and their commitment to mobilize material support for the fight against COVID-19 on the continent.
The Council also commended Ethiopian Airlines and the World Food Program (WFP) for delivering donated medical equipment to all member states.
The Board affirmed its unwavering support for the tireless efforts of WHO, in particular its Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, by providing timely information, technical guidance and material assistance for efforts to contain the spread and mitigate the impact of COVID -19.
The Peace and Security Council also praised CDC Africa, member states, and all private sector entities, partner countries, international institutions, and philanthropic organizations for mobilizing resources and taking swift action to mitigate the impact of the virus.
