The Barcelona presidential candidate believes he can convince Messi to stay.
Barcelona’s presidential candidate, Víctor Font, is confident that he will be able to retain Lionel Messi after the end of the season. The Argentine is in the final year of his contract and will be a free agent next season. It would be an absolute disaster if Messi went for free as Barca are in financial trouble right now and Messi’s transfer could help them avoid bankruptcy.
More of All the Barça
The Argentine came into the limelight in August when he sent an official letter to the club’s former director asking them to release him from the club. This was a clause in the contract that allowed him to leave at the end of the season.
There was immediate interest from players like Manchester City and Inter Milan, but after some legal complications, Messi decided to serve the final year of his contract.
The big question now is whether he will continue with the club of his childhood or will go to a team like City or PSG. Font believes he can persuade the captain to stay if he is elected president in the next election. In an interview with ESPN, Font said:
“I am convinced that with a competitive, exciting project and, especially in the case of Messi, in the long term, which could even go beyond the day Messi retires, we will convince him to stay.”
Origin target
He went on to claim that Messi is the best player who has ever played the game and therefore it is important to reach an agreement as soon as the elections are over. The president-elect goes on to say that Messi seeks a competitive side and always seeks to win. Barça must bring him the same winning mentality. Salaries, however, are one part where the club could have some problems.
“[His salary] it is one of the realities that must be adjusted. The level of income in the short term and for the next season is in the air. It depends on what happens to the fans who return to the stadium.
However, Font is still confident that Messi’s love for his club will ultimately make the decision. The 33-year-old has been with the Catalans since he was 13. There are many memories and a lot of love for the club. It is heartbreaking for all football fans that Messi can leave the club, but the decision is ultimately based on the player’s own emotions and feelings.
The way things currently look, it is quite possible that the magician will leave when the season is over. Barcelona currently occupies ninth position, 12 points behind the league leaders. It’s been a pretty disappointing start and if Ronald Koeman doesn’t turn things around soon, Messi could be playing in a different league than next season.
Will Mesis sign an extension with Barça?
