JAKARTA • The actual death toll from Covid-19 in Indonesia could triple the reported figure, which reached 10,308 yesterday.
Dicky Budiman, an epidemiologist at Griffith University in Australia, said Indonesia had the highest number of Covid-19 deaths of all Asean countries and that the nation ranks third in Covid-19 deaths among Asian countries.
According to Dicky, the death toll is a valid indicator of the management of Covid-19 in certain countries and regions.
But he said the actual death toll in Indonesia could triple the reported figure.
“Indonesia should refer to the WHO (World Health Organization) definition of death from Covid-19 and should implement it in the country for our own good,” Dicky said, quoted by Kompas.com on Friday.
According to the WHO, a death from Covid-19 is defined for follow-up purposes as a death resulting from a clinically compatible disease in a probable or confirmed case of Covid-19, unless there is a clear alternative cause of death that cannot be linked. with Covid-19. – for example, trauma.
There should not be a complete Covid-19 recovery period between illness and death.
A death from Covid-19 may not be attributed to another disease, such as cancer, and must be counted regardless of pre-existing conditions that are suspected of triggering a severe course of Covid-19.
Dicky said the more than 10,000 Indonesian deaths from Covid-19 were confirmed.
“Meanwhile, we do not count (the deaths of people with) probable or suspected conditions.
If we count them all, we could see three more times, “he added.
Indonesia reported 4,494 new coronavirus infections yesterday, bringing the total number of cases to 271,339, official data from the Ministry of Health showed.
The country also reported 90 new deaths from the virus.
