According to a rumor coming from people working in Apple’s supply chain, the smallest laptop in the MacBook family, the 12-inch MacBook, is making a comeback this year with Apple’s new ARM-based chip. It makes sense that the 12-inch MacBook is the first of its kind, as it was powered by Intel’s low-power Core Y series chips.
Earlier, Ming-Chi Kuo said that 13- or 24-inch iMacs will be the first Macs with internal chips from Apple. The new report allegedly comes directly from TSMC as it is Apple’s sole supplier of Apple’s A-series chipsets. The foundry is said to have stopped making chips for Huawei and can now easily adapt to Apple’s needs.
The source also adds that the next A14 Bionic chip that will be used in the iPhone 12 family and will also be implemented in iPads such as A14X Bionic will also be coming to the 12-inch MacBook this year. Namely, the A14X Bionic silicon will power up the MacBook too.
This would boost the performance of the MacBook quite a bit, but more importantly, it would offer exceptional battery life. Apple promises something like 15-20 hours on a single charge.
Keep in mind that this would be the first MacBook to make the transition and the rest of the MacBook line, the 13-, 15- and 16-inch ones, will be swapping out their CPUs for ARM-based ones in the next two years.
