Tourism industry players are saddened by the untimely demise of Tanzanian President Dr. John Magufuli, who said he was the industry exponent.
- The Tanzania Tour Operators Association paid tribute to President Maguflie’s support for tourism, from information technology to national forests.
- The late president’s vision was to achieve the goal of 5 million tourists in 5 years.
- TATO has expressed its confidence in the new president who worked with Dr. Magufuli, Ms. Samia Suluhu Hassan, saying that he believes he will do even better in promoting tourism.
In a televised national address, then-Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan announced that death robbed the country of the brave leader on Wednesday, March 17, 2021, around 6:00 pm.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of President Magufuli. He did everything possible to support the tourism industry by installing hardware and software infrastructures with a view to boosting the business, ”reads part of the statement from the Tanzania Tour Operators Association (TATO).
The document signed by TATO President Wilbard Chambulo cites a series of paved roads leading to national parks and the redevelopment of airports to offer tourists hassle-free travel as his legacy to the industry.
As if that wasn’t enough, the fallen head of state allocated extensive land to add 6 new national parks during the little over 5 years he has been in office, a clear sign of his desire to boost the tourism industry.
The new national parks are Nyerere, Burigi- Chato, Ibanda Kyerwa, Rumanyika Karagwe, Kigosi and the Ugalla River.
After the establishment of the 6 new parks in addition to the previous 16 national parks, something that was reiterated about the fate of Tanzania is that it is a premier nature and wildlife destination with 22 national parks in addition to the marine parks that support the vision of the president fallen 5 million tourists in 5 years.
The head of TATO further said that the late Dr. Magufuli also implemented an effective online payment system for government payments, a measure that has saved many resources and improved compliance from a tour operator point of view.
Meanwhile, TATO has expressed deep pleasure in the new president, Ms. Samia Suluhu Hassan, saying that she believes she will do even better in fostering tourism and a conservation push considering she was part of the success story of the late Dr. Magufuli. .
“TATO wishes him the best and hopes that he will maintain the government’s support for the private sector to grow,” the statement read in part.
First elected as Magufuli’s running mate in 2015, Ms. Samia Suluhu was re-elected last year along with him and, according to the constitution, should serve the remainder of the 5-year term in the main position.
She becomes Africa’s only current female national leader (Ethiopia’s presidency is a largely ceremonial role) and joins a short list of women on the continent who have led their countries.
The 61-year-old is affectionately known as Mama Samia, in Tanzanian culture that reflects respect for her, rather than reducing her to a gender role.
