TANZANIA Coffee Board (TCB) has launched a campaign to distribute the best Robusta coffee seedlings to Karagwe coffee growers in the Kagera region to increase production.

TCB’s Acting CEO Professor Jamal Adam revealed this recently, speaking to journalists about ongoing programs to improve coffee production in the country.

The seedlings being distributed are the product of special coffee research conducted by experts at the Kitengule Prison Coffee Nursery.

Professor Adam said the program would increase productivity among small coffee producers, most of whom were the main target of the campaign.

The intention is to increase coffee production from the current 50,000 tons to 200,000 tons per year by 2025.

He revealed that TCB would collaborate with the district councils to introduce demonstration farms in all coffee districts in the country.

The farms will serve as educational centers for coffee growers.

Professor Adam said that Tanzanian coffee has continued to establish its place among the best globally.

“We will not stop keeping coffee growers up to date with new technologies so that we continue to produce the best coffee in the world,” he explained.

Tanzania is among the top three coffee producing countries in Africa after Ethiopia and Kenya and contributes around one percent of the total Arabica beans globally.

The country is known for high-end coffee with a fruity flavor and bright acidity.

Coffee production has a significant contribution to the national economy with an average of between 30,000 and 40,000 metric tons per year, of which about 70% is Arabica, while 30% is Robusta.
