Nintendo announced at today’s Indie World Showcase that the multiplayer phenomenon was an unexpected success. Among us comes to the Switch … today.

Until now, Among us It has been exclusive to PC and mobile devices, which means that this is the first time the game has been available on console. It also makes sense: the game looks good alongside the basics of the Nintendo console. Given that we received the game today, it makes sense that Switch players will also have access to Airship, the first new map announced by developers InnerSloth during the Game Awards last week.
The game originally launched in 2018 and suddenly exploded in popularity this year thanks to the momentum of Twitch streamers. Now everyone, including Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, has played the game, and the developers have scrapped plans for a sequel in favor of developing new material for the existing game. If there was a big winner in 2020, it was certainly Among us. And this is a year where games have risen in popularity overall, but none more so than this indie favorite.
That said, one of the most important aspects of Among us is communication, and it is not yet clear how communication will work on Switch. The Switch does not have a built-in voice chat function. It could be assumed that any voice chat would be handled through the Switch Online mobile app, but that’s assuming everyone playing has a subscription to Switch Online. Text chat could also be an option. On the other hand, I would be surprised if most people didn’t go for the expedient of using their phones and Discord, a free app.
The game is available on the Nintendo Store right now for $ 5. It supports cross-play with PC and mobile players, which is also a bonus.
