Super Smash Bros. initially started out as the ultimate crossover battle royale for Nintendo’s many franchises, but eventually became fertile ground for ties to iconic characters from other game companies. Do you know what other game has become similar fertile ground for franchise ties? Yes, Minecraft. Not exactly surprising, then, that these two worlds collide, albeit on Nintendo’s ground. The developers of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, however, may have bitten off more than they could chew when they tried to make these blocky characters fit into the fast-paced action of the game.
How difficult would it be to put characters that look like a next step above the stick figures in a 3D fighting game? While the character models themselves are simplistic, the real challenge for developers who have been working for the past few months is integrating key Minecraft features into a game that was not designed for creation. After all, what makes Steve and Alex interesting is not the way they look (which is barely seen anyway), but what they can do.
The developers had to redesign Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to allow for the unconventional abilities of the two. These include the ability to mine, create blocks, and craft tools and weapons. And yes, there will be stages taken directly from Minecraft, including its destructible environments.
Beyond direct gameplay, this Minecraft addition also stays true to the spirit of the game in more ways than one. For example, you can choose how Alex and Steve look to some extent, including the Zombie and Enderman skins. There is also a selection of music from the more action-oriented incarnations of Minecraft, such as Minecraft Earth and Minecraft Dungeons.
These Minecraft items are available in Fighters Pass Vol. 2, which retails for $ 29.99 and also includes ARMS Min Min and four upcoming Challenger packs. Alternatively, players can also purchase Steve and Alex in a standalone Challenger Pack 7 for $ 5.99.
