Sudanese officials meet with AU experts on the Nile dam issue

Sudanese officials and the African Union (AU) team of experts held a meeting on Saturday on the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), Sudan’s Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources said.

“Sudan’s negotiating team on GERD, led by Sudan’s Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources, Yasir Abbas, held a bilateral meeting on Saturday afternoon with the AU team of experts,” the ministry said in a statement. .

“The meeting came in response to Sudan’s call to give AU experts a greater role in facilitating the talks between Sudan, Egypt and Ethiopia to contribute to the preparation of a second document for the proposed memorandum of understanding which was received by the three countries in the previous six-party meeting ”, he said.

He said the meeting thoroughly discussed the importance of establishing a clear framework for the role of the AU experts, adding that Sudan has emphasized the need for the AU to play a more effective leadership role than its role in the rounds of previous conversations.
