A strong 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck Mindanao on Sunday. According to preliminary data from EMSC, the epicenter of this earthquake was located offshore south of Davao. The earthquake occurred at a depth of about 120 km. Due to this depth, moderate tremors were felt in many parts of Mindanao. However, no significant damage is expected as the intensity weakened. The user reported that the shaking from this earthquake lasted up to 30 seconds, typical of large deep earthquakes.

Most important facts of the earthquake:

MMI II (very weak tremor) ?

Persons :
Felt by people at rest, on upper floors or favorably located.

MMI III (weak tremor) ?

Persons :
Felt inside; hanging objects may sway, vibration similar to the passing of light trucks, the duration can be estimated, it may not be recognized as an earthquake.

MMI IV (slight shaking) ?

Persons :
It is usually noticeable on the inside but not on the outside. Light sleepers may wake up. Vibration can be compared to the passing of heavy traffic or the shaking of a heavy object that falls or hits the building.
Fittings :
Clink of doors and windows. Glassware and crockery rattle. Liquids in open containers may be slightly disturbed. Stationary cars can rock.
Structures :
The creaking of walls and frames in buildings, and partitions and false ceilings of commercial buildings may be heard.

MMI V (moderate tremor) ?

Persons :
It is generally felt on the outside and almost all on the inside. Most of the sleepers woke up. Some people were alarmed.
Fittings :
Small unstable objects are displaced or disturbed. Some glassware and crockery may be broken. The hanging pictures hit the wall. Open doors can swing. Cabinet doors secured with magnetic latches can be opened. Pendulum clocks stop, start, or change speed.
Structures :
Some large shop windows were cracked. Some mud toilets were cracked.

MMI VI (strong shaking) ?

Persons
Felt by all. People and animals alarmed. Many run outside. Experienced difficulty walking steadily.
Fittings :
Objects fall from shelves. Pictures fall from the walls. Some furniture was moved on smooth floors, some freestanding unsecured fireplaces were moved. Broken glassware and crockery. Very unstable furniture overturned. Small church and school bells ring. Appliances move on tables or benches. File cabinets or “easy slide” drawers can be opened (or closed).
Structures :
Slight damage to low-level buildings. Some plaster or cement stucco falls off. Large broken windows. Damage to some weak domestic chimneys, some may fall.
Ambient :
Trees and shrubs shake or rustle. Loose material can be dislodged from sloping terrain, for example existing landslides, embankment slope, shingle landslides.

MMI VII (very strong shaking) ?

Persons
General alarm. Experienced difficulty standing up. Detected by car drivers that can be stopped.
Fittings :
Big bells ring. Furniture moves on smooth floors, it can move on carpeted floors. Substantial damage to the fragile contents of buildings.
Structures :
The unreinforced stone and brick walls cracked. Low-grade buildings cracked with some minor masonry sags. Some cases of damage to buildings from ordinary labor. Parapets without bracing, brick pediments without bracing and architectural ornaments fall. Roof tiles, especially ridge tiles, can come off. Many unreinforced domestic fireplaces were damaged, often falling from the roof line. Type I water tanks burst. Some cases of damage to brick linings and plaster or cement linings. Unsecured water cylinders (hot water cylinders) can move and leak. Some common windows were cracked. Damaged false ceilings.
Ambient :
Cloudy water from churning mud. Small landslides such as sand falls and gravel banks, and small rockfalls from steep slopes and cuts. Cases of settlement of unconsolidated, humid or weak soils. Some fine cracks appear on sloping terrain. Some cases of liquefaction (that is, small jets of water and sand).

MMI VIII (severe tremors) ?

Persons
The alarm can be close to panic. The steering of cars is greatly affected.

Structures : Low-level buildings badly damaged, some collapse. buildings of ordinary labor damaged, some partially collapsed. Reinforced masonry or damaged concrete buildings in some cases. Some cases of damage to buildings and bridges designed and constructed to withstand earthquakes. Monuments and elevated tanks from before 1976 and piles of bent or toppled factories. Some masonry infill panels prior to 1965 are damaged. Some damaged post 1980 brick veneers. Rotten wood stacks from damaged houses. Homes that are not secured to the foundation can move. Most unreinforced domestic chimneys were damaged, some below the roof line, many knocked down.

Ambient : Cracks appear on steep slopes and in wet soil. Small to moderate landslides in unsupported road cuts and excavations. Small water and sand ejections and localized lateral scattering adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.

MMI IX (violent tremor) ?

Structures
Many low-level buildings destroyed. Buildings of ordinary labor badly damaged, some collapse. Damaged reinforced masonry or concrete buildings, some partially collapsed. Buildings and bridges designed and constructed to withstand earthquake damage in some cases, some with seriously damaged flexible frames. Permanent damage or distortion in some buildings and bridges, designed and constructed according to the standards of normal use. Houses that were not secured to the foundations were displaced. The brick veneers fall and expose the frames.

Ambient : Conspicuous ground cracks. General landslides on steep slopes. The effects of liquefaction intensified and spread, with a large lateral extension and flow slip adjacent to streams, canals, lakes, etc.
