The holiday season is over, the new year has yet to begin, and we find ourselves in that fun week between holidays where the world just seems to wait. On the internet, maybe it would be better to think of this as a list season – a period of reflection, where we think about the things we love and hate in a year with a lot of both. Along those lines, Valve just released a list of Steam’s best-selling games for 2020. So let’s take a look: these are the top 10 best-selling games on Steam by gross revenue, so it also includes free titles. Presented in the order they appear on this page, which does not indicate any type of ranking:
- DOTA 2
- Destiny 2
- Monster Hunter: World
- Among us
- PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds
- Eternal DOOM
- Red Dead Redemption 2
- GTA V
- Counter Strike Global Offensive
- Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout
- Rainbow six siege
- Cyberpunk 2077
As the headline promised, these games appear to fall into three categories.
Live service games over 2 years: The busiest category on the list by far. These are older games that just won’t, and include DOTA 2, Monster Hunter World, CS: GO and Rainbow six siege. I will also argue that Red Dead Redemption 2 and Destiny 2 They also fall into this category, but it gets a bit murkier because even though they’re older, they didn’t appear on Steam until recently. Regardless, this category is the bulwark of the gaming industry at this point, proving that by far the best way to have a successful game in 2020 is … already to have a successful game. The king is still the king, to quote The wire.
Indie viral sensations: This includes Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout and Among us, two leak sets of 2020 from comparatively small studios. They both got huge on the backs of streamers and influencers, appealing to a distinctly dumber sensibility than the rest of these relatively shady posts. Both are also live service titles, and I hope to see them again on the list next year.
Ultra-promoted and PC-centric AAA: There was a time when this would be the most popular category, but that time has long passed. These games are DOOM: Eternal and Cyberpunk 2077, two highly hyped AAA games from major studios with a different focus on PC. It would be remiss to mention that Cyberpunk 2077 It did this while it was a buggy and broken mess on low-end PCs and console, but it still sold heavily on the back of pre-orders.
So that’s what this list tells us: In addition to the viral sensations and massive productions, the biggest games are the tried and true live service titles that we will probably see again next year. We will see some changes, but I predict that we will see at least half of these titles on the list again next year.
