Balan Wonderworld was shown once again during last night’s Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase, and here’s a closer look at everything you can expect from the game.
As players explore the fantastic land of Wonderworld, they will be guided by an enigmatic master named Balan, who will help players restore balance to the world by clearing the Wonderworld of Negati, physical manifestations of worry, and other negative emotions.
The main characters in the game are Leo Craig and Emma Cole, two 15-year-olds who are drawn to the land of Wonderworld. The pair will also face off against Lance, a villain who traps visitors at Wonderworld to create the Negati.
To accomplish this, players will jump, climb, fly, smash, and more, while exploring a multitude of unique areas, collecting over 80 unique costumes to aid them on their journey.
Each costume grants its users special powers, from the Pumpkin Puncher costume that allows players to pass through enemies and obstacles to the Air Cat costume that allows players to walk in the air for a certain amount of time.
There are twelve worlds for players to explore, all created by the hearts of tormented souls. These levels will test your knowledge of platforms, culminating in a massive boss battle that will free the souls of the world. You will also need to defeat the various Negati in one level and collect Balan statues to open up new worlds.
Between worlds, players will be able to spend their downtime in the central world, the Isle of Tims. This is where players can travel between worlds, as well as raise Tims, little creatures born out of positive emotions. They look a lot like the Chao from Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, and increasing these Tims will also grant you additional items.
The new Nintendo Direct trailer also showcases Balan Wonderworld’s cooperative multiplayer feature. With this feature, two players can explore the game in local cooperative mode and use creativity to overcome challenges by finding ideal costume combinations that work well together.
Players can work independently, using the skills of their respective costumes, or if both players get close to each other, they can enjoy the “Joint Play” feature and use their costume skills together at the same time.
Balan Wonderworld is an entirely new experience from renowned gaming industry talents, including director Yuji Naka (Sonic the Hedgehog franchise creator, co-founder of Sonic Team) and character designer Naoto Ohshima (Sonic the Hedgehog, Doctor Eggman , co-founder of Sonic Team). The game marks the first collaboration between Yuji Naka and Naoto Ohshima in 20 years and is the first game from the newly established game brand Balan Company.
Balan Wonderworld will be available for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X with support for Smart Delivery on March 26, 2021. The Steam version will launch on March 27, 2021.
