Spotify Launches Group Sessions That Allow Multiple Users To Create And Control Playlists In Real Time

Spotify introduces group session feature that allows multiple users to create and control playlists in real time

  • The feature allows users to pause, play, skip, and add songs to a playlist
  • It is positioning itself as a way to entertain quarantined people
  • Group sessions can have up to 100 people at a time
  • The feature is in beta and is being tested and developed.

A new Spotify feature will allow users to collaborate on playlists in real time.

Group sessions, as Spotify calls them, will allow two or more premium users in the same area to create and control playlists in real time, meaning that any participating user will be able to pause, play or skip to the next song.

The feature is currently being implemented for users worldwide.

As TechCrunch noted, Spotify says the feature should come in handy among people who are trapped in common spaces due to isolation or family measures.

To use the feature, users can tap the ‘connect’ button that appears in the lower left corner of the app interface to get a scannable code.

They can then share that code with their guests who can use it to join the session. Sessions can contain up to 100 users at a time.

The feature, which is only available to premium users, will be released in beta, which means it is currently being tested and developed.

Guests can control music, add songs, and all additions to the playlist will be shown to other participants.

The feature will complement a number of new additions to Spotify apps over the past year, including increased functionality with Siri that allows iOS users to change songs, pause, and play on Spotify using Siri’s voice commands.

Spotify has also advanced with other new features, including a trial of one that shows Lyrics in real time through the app while listening to a song.

The feature, which was being tested on Android devices earlier this year, was noticed by a user with beta 8.5.46.848 and is currently only available to some.

A slider bar appears below the app’s normal play / pause interface and you can swipe up to expand the lyrics to full screen.

Android Police reported that the lyrics are not currently available on all songs and are provided through the streaming partner’s former partner, Musicxmatch.
