Last week, Spotify revamped its web and desktop applications to work more like the mobile versions, making the music streaming service easier to use on all platforms. In addition to the revamped look, Spotify now offers more control for desktop and web users, meaning easier playlist creation with drag-and-drop track capabilities. Desktop and web users can now also write playlist descriptions and add cover images, just like you would on mobile devices.
Perhaps one of the biggest updates for Premium Members – the ability to download tracks to a computer with your desktop application. This was already available for the mobile app, but now laptop and desktop users can also enjoy downloaded music offline.
Here’s how to download music from Spotify on desktop and mobile apps.

How to download music on the Spotify mobile app
In case you didn’t know this can be done on a mobile device, it’s easy. Create a new playlist by going to your Library tab and touching Create Playlist. Give your playlist a name and start adding songs. It doesn’t matter if you only have one song or a dozen, just change Download in the mobile app. A small green arrow will appear next to each song.
But where do you find the downloads once you have them? Go back to the Library tab and slide your finger down the screen; a small search bar should appear. Tap Filters, choose Downloads, and then choose how you want Spotify to sort your download (by song, artist, etc.). You should now see each and every song you have downloaded that you can now listen to offline.
How to Download Music on Spotify Desktop App
Downloading music with the Spotify desktop or web app is essentially the same as using the mobile app. Unfortunately, you cannot download solely using the web player in a browser, but downloading the desktop application is free.
- Open the Spotify desktop app (if you haven’t downloaded it yet, please do so from the app store of your choice).
- Create your playlist. You can do this by clicking on a song> Add to Playlist. From there, add it to an existing playlist or choose New Playlist to start from scratch.
- Open your playlist (if you closed it while searching for songs) and activate Download.
- Once completed, you will see a small green arrow next to the downloaded playlist in the left panel. The small green arrow indicates that the playlist is available offline, it is not necessary to go through filters like on mobile.
- If you no longer want the playlist or songs to be available offline, just turn off Download.
