For what feels like the umpteenth time this year, a high-profile video game developer has asked for respect as the reviews have gone too far. Bryan Intihar, the creative director of Marvel’s Spider-Man, has asked for more kindness in the community of the title, after receiving threatening messages due to the modification of the Peter Parker face model in the upcoming PlayStation 5 remaster of the launch.

This isn’t the first time that a major PlayStation exclusive has received extreme criticism, as The Last of Us: Part II was at the epicenter of a storm earlier this year, and Naughty Dog Vice President Neil Druckmann received the worst part of the reaction. . So serious was the abuse that the Californian developer was forced to issue a statement.
It’s another unfortunate reminder of how toxic online speech tends to be in 2020, with relatively minor creative decisions attracting disproportionate degrees of anger. Constructive criticism is a good thing and we all have the right to express our opinion, but insults, attacks and personal threats are. Never good!
