There will be an incredible meteor shower this month, and it will be a spectacular sight.
The Orionid shower will begin today, Friday, October 2 through November 7, and you will see hundreds of shooting stars streaking through the night sky.
While the show will run for about six weeks, the best time to see the shower will be Wednesday, October 21, with NASA explaining that we can expect around 20 meteors per hour.
The Orionid meteor shower occurs every year in October, when Halley’s Comet enters the solar system. As the Earth passes through the debris of ice and dust, the pieces collide with our atmosphere before disintegrating and creating fiery “bursts of light.”
Writing about the rain, NASA said: “The Orionids, which peak in mid-October each year, are considered one of the most beautiful showers of the year. Orionid meteors are known for their brightness and speed.
“These meteors are fast – they travel at about 148,000 mph (66 km / s) into Earth’s atmosphere. Fast meteors can leave behind glowing ‘trains’ (pieces of incandescent debris from the meteor) lasting from several seconds to minutes. ..
“Fast meteorites can sometimes turn into fireballs too – look for prolonged bursts of light when you see the Orionid meteor shower.
“The Orionids are also framed by some of the brightest stars in the night sky, which provide a spectacular backdrop for these striking meteors.”
And NASA has even provided some advice on how we can all keep an eye out for the fascinating shower for the next few weeks.
Explaining that they can be seen in the northern and southern hemispheres after midnight, NASA recommends looking for an area away from city or street lights.
“Come prepared with a sleeping bag, blanket, or lawn chair. Lie on your back with your feet facing southeast if you are in the northern hemisphere or northeast if you are in the southern hemisphere, and look up. , assimilating as much of the sky as possible, “they explain.
“In less than 30 minutes in the dark, your eyes will adjust and you will start to see meteorites. Be patient, the show will last until dawn so you have plenty of time to take a look.”
