The spokesman for the House of People’s Representatives (HPR) has issued a warning to Members of Parliament (MP) from the Tigray region, who left their seats after the region held elections in defiance of the federal government.
At a press conference on Wednesday, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tagesse Chaffo, said that following the dispute with the regional state of Tigray, the Federal Government is preparing a well-researched legal framework, a new work system and a structure to regulate relations with local administrations in Tigray. State to guarantee equal benefits for citizens.
Tagesse said the government is placing due emphasis on maintaining the provision of basic services and meeting the people’s demands for development and democracy. Currently, he added, the House of the Federation (HoF) is entrusted with the formulation of a new legal framework aimed at fulfilling the aspiration of the peoples to good government and prosperity.
Tagesse indicated that the deputies are only responsible to the Constitution, the electorate and their conscience, and said that the majority of Tigray representatives did not attend the previous two sessions of the House, in accordance with the illegal demand of their political party ( TPLF) to leave their seats.
While urging deputies to return to their entrusted duty, Tagesse noted, the HPR could take legal action against those legislators who have not appeared during sessions held by the House.
Regarding the structural reforms of the HPR, the speaker said that the past two or more years had seen commendable achievements in transforming the House into a place of vibrant debate. Due to the reform, the chamber has effectively monitored and evaluated the performance of the executive body, which has resulted in the early completion of the delayed megaprojects, he added.
However, the rapporteur noted, the constitutional decree was violated by the party in power that was in power before the reform. As a result, Parliament corrected this issue under the country’s law through various mechanisms such as open discussions and trainings, the president said.
The HPR, which operates with all its potential and factors on the ground, has been forced to correct, revise and ratify new proclamations, such as areas of investment, finance, insurance, excise, agricultural mechanization, tourism, fight against terrorism, arms management and control, the Spokesperson explained.
It should be recalled that on October 7, 2020, the HoF voted to withhold budget subsidies to the regional state of Tigray. The HoF move came two days after Tigray’s regional leaders decided to withdraw their federal representatives.
Tensions had already risen since September, when the region held regional elections in defiance of the federal government’s opposition.
