The Election Commission of India (ECI) will host an international webinar with delegates from 45 countries on “Issues, challenges and protocols for conducting elections during Covid-19” on Monday.
This is the first webinar held by the Association of World Election Bodies (A-WEB) Center of India. More than 120 delegates from 45 countries, including Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, the Republic of Korea, Russia, South Africa, Sri Lanka and Turkey, will participate in the webinar.
Korea and Sri Lanka are two countries that have held national elections amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
The webinar will take place after the completion of the one-year term of the CE of the Association of World Electoral Bodies (A-WEB). A-WEB is the largest association of Electoral Management Bodies (EOs) in the world. At present, A-WEB has 115 SOs as members and 16 regional associations and organizations as associate members. ECI has been very closely associated with the A-WEB training process since 2011-12.
The EMBs and participating organizations, with the first session chaired by Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra, will make presentations. The first session will include presentations from Fiji, Republic of Korea, Mongolia and Taiwan, as well as International IDEA and A-WEB, where these EMBs and organizations will share the challenges faced, as well as their experiences and perspectives for holding elections during the pandemic. The second session will be chaired by the recently appointed Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar with presentations from South Africa, Indonesia, Bangladesh, India, Malawi and IFES.
“The interactions and discussions at the international webinar on September 21 are expected to provide a good opportunity for all participants to exchange ideas and learn from each other’s experience in holding and managing elections in difficult times of the pandemic. Covid-19 to guarantee the freedom of fair, transparent and safe elections, ”the ECI said in a statement.
