Last week, Google announced the Pixel 5, its latest flagship phone, which will launch in various countries around the world later this month. However, Google fans in France will not be able to buy the Pixel 5 in both colors.
For this year, Google has reduced the options to two color combinations, the traditional Just Black and the new Sorta Sage, a size and a single storage option of 128 GB. The most likely explanation for this is that it was simply to cut costs and make the Pixel 5 more affordable.
Since there are only two models, it would be easy to think that both should be available in all countries where the Pixel 5 is available. Unfortunately, that does not appear to be the case. As our own Dylan Roussel pointed out, for about a week after the Launch Night In event, the Google Store in France featured the Pixel 5 in “Subtly wise“Y”Just black”- Sorta Sage and Just Black.
However, as of today, the Google Store in France has been updated to show only the Just Black color scheme. Google confirmed to us this afternoon that the inclusion of Sorta Sage on the page was unintentional and that the store has been updated to reflect expected inventory.
The change coincides with the availability of last year’s Pixel 4 series in France, where the only color was Just Black. The likely reason Google only offers a single color in the country has to do with French laws that require phone manufacturers to include headphones with every purchase. To that end, in the US, Google’s Pixel phones have not included headsets in the box since the Pixel 3 of 2018.
To accommodate that restriction, both the Pixel 4 and Pixel 5 include Google’s $ 29 USB-C headphones in the box. Instead of creating that special multi-color packaging, Google seems to have chosen to sell only one color of its Pixel phones in France.
