Sony today unveils a new drone project called Airpeek that appears to be targeting image and video content creators, something Sony has long targeted with its impressive lineup of cameras. The product, which we envision will be its own drone, is expected to launch in spring 2021. Does this alert DJI, Parrot, Skydio and others?
Sony only gives an Airpeek
The press release didn’t reveal much, noting that the drone project was in the field of AI robotics:
The recent proliferation of drones has contributed greatly to the delivery of never-before-seen imagery, as well as to workflow efficiency and energy savings in the industrial sector. Sony has assigned the brand “Airpeak” to reflect its aspiration to contribute to further evolution and the creation of unprecedented value through its imaging and sensing technology, as well as 3R (Reality, Real Time and Remote) technologies in the drone area. .
Airpeak will support the creativity of video creators to the greatest extent possible, with the aim of contributing to the further development of the entertainment industry, as well as improving efficiency and savings in various industries. Airpeak will also promote this project to enable the use of drones with the highest level of safety and reliability in environments where this has been difficult in the past.
Sony will continue to publish information related to the project and obtain feedback from drone users through co-creation activities to prepare for the launch of the project in spring 2021.
The company plans to soon start looking for partners in the professional space who can collaborate on the project.
The company aims to be …

We open the skies into an infinite creative playground, one with unprecedented freedom.
Let us take you to a never-before-achieved creative experience unleashing all limitations and barriers.
What we know
In the video teaser below, we see that the engine and blades appear to be black and there appears to be some carbon fiber on one of the arms.
We know that Sony makes the best image sensors in the world, including flagship smartphone cameras, as well as image sensors for drones from DJI and others. Obviously Sony has a full line of high-end camera solutions too, so it’s not hard to see why this is a good option.
Sony is no stranger to expanding its conglomerate into interesting spaces. At the last CES, Sony unveiled its electric car project.
If Sony enters the drone space directly adjacent to DJI and others, it could affect Sony’s image sensor business that DJI could take elsewhere or develop internally. That said, Sony makes Android phones and that hasn’t affected sensor sales to Apple, Samsung, and others.
Another entry into the drone space is urgently needed as all countries seem to have drone issues for other countries. As we have written, the US government has long been paranoid about DJI’s association with China. And last week, Japan (Sony’s home country) banned drones from China for security reasons.
Interesting moment!
Not much else can be found on the Airpeak website. Of course we will continue to investigate!
