Sony expects PS5 to outsell PS4 in both short and long term

Sony is coming off the back of a strong generation of consoles in terms of the success of the PS4, but from the way the winds are blowing, they are already boldly predicting that the PS5 will be an even better era for them.

Sony predicts that the PS5 will outsell the PS4 both in the short term, where it is supposed to surpass the 7.6 million units sold of the PS4 in the first two quarters, and in the long term, where the PS4 has sold more than 100. million units, according to a recent investor call with Sony CFO Hiro Totoki. This joins the comments made by Jim Ryan where he says that the PS5 sold more in 12 hours than the PS4 sold in 12 weeks.

Here are some screenshots. It is likely that due to this demand, the PS5 supply will be limited this holiday season. And Sony also admits that they are suffering losses on each console at the moment, which is not surprising given the $ 400 price of the digital version and the amount of power it produces.

This is not to say that Sony’s rival Microsoft is failing with the sales of the Xbox Series X and S. Like the PS5, pre-orders have sold out for both consoles almost instantly, but since Microsoft is no longer reports exact console sales totals, we don’t see similar predictions. But everything indicates that it will likely have a stronger launch than the Xbox One, which struggled to get off the ground between Sony’s record that set the first PS4 sales.

Sony has a relatively strong launch line of PS5 games, with Godfall, Demon’s Souls, and Spider-Man Miles Morales as the console’s three exclusive standouts. Microsoft infamously missed Halo Infinite for its launch window, and has to rely almost entirely on third-party games that will also be available on PlayStation.

But the real reason Sony is poised for another big launch here is because of the performance of the PS4. We just finished a full generation full of solid hardware and software from Sony, and that allowed them to take advantage of very significant market share. And now when the next generation launches, unless there are very, very clear reasons to switch from Sony to Microsoft, many will just keep playing with the brand they know, which by more than a 2: 1 margin, has been PlayStation. . The Xbox Series X is an enormously powerful console and looks to correct many of the mistakes of its predecessor, but here, a draw is not good enough, and add in some attractive exclusives and you have another early advantage from Sony once the supply constraints. be less of a problem.

All in all, it seems highly likely that both consoles will drastically outperform their predecessors, both in terms of increased gaming spending during the pandemic and overall growth over the years since the previous generational launch. Sony will be selling more consoles, that seems clear, and yet it will keep an eye out for subscriptions for Xbox Game Pass and xCloud from Microsoft, which are pushing more than physical hardware right now. It is going to be an explosive generation where everyone will most likely win.
