Update: Sony has confirmed that they will be holding a PSVR presentation this week, but that there will be “no PS5 related news,” refuting the leak suggesting otherwise. We have updated our post to make this clear.
Just days after Nintendo celebrated its 35th anniversary of Super Mario, rumors surfaced that Sony would commemorate the 25th anniversary of the launch of Playstation 1 in the United States with a major Playstation 5 display. However, this rumor is contradicted by a Official Playstation blog post.
WhatHiFi first reported in a Reddit post that it referenced a supposedly “official” leak from 4Chan, stating that Sony would be putting out a big reveal on September 9, 2020.
The post claimed that Sony would eventually open pre-order links, reveal the price and release date of the PS5, show off the console’s user interface and new features, and more. The alleged showcase would proceed to reveal new gameplay footage from previously announced titles such as Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, West horizon forbidden, Ratchet and Clank and Call of Duty: Cold War.
However, we learned through Gamesradar that Sony has no such plans. Instead, they will announce “upcoming games coming to PlayStation VR” throughout the week, as well as detailing new developments for previously announced titles. They also announced a sale on most of the best PSVR games.
Reddit has tagged the original post as fake, and it’s clear Sony has no plans for a sudden surprise bait and switch. We will have to wait longer to receive official PS5 news.
Another false prediction among many
Rumors about the price or release date of the PS5 are a penny a dozen, and we’ve seen many “credible” rumors that turn out to be nonsense. It’s no wonder this 4Chan rumor followed in their footsteps.
A rumor on Twitter suggested that pre-orders for the PS5 would absolutely open in March. That obviously didn’t happen. In the meantime, we’ve reported several cases of leaked PS5 pricing, including on Amazon and a French retailer, that turned out to be fake.
In hindsight, it was highly unlikely that Sony, a Japanese company, would consider such a US-centric milestone important enough for a global disclosure of information that it has kept hidden for months.
What do we really know about the PS5 price and pre-orders? For starters, pre-orders are expected to be very limited, so you may want to stay by your computer Wednesday in case Sony makes a surprise reveal. On the other hand, Sony hopes you don’t need a pre-order to buy a PS5 at launch, so don’t worry if the initial pre-orders sell out quickly.
Sony says it will “emphasize value rather than price” when deciding the official cost, and will sell the digital-only console at a lower list price than the disk version.
Ultimately, if the latest release date rumor that the PS5 will launch after the Xbox Series X in mid-November is true, Sony will finally have to give us the official release details pretty soon.
