Some Apple AirPods Max owners are finding condensation inside the earbuds, according to some reports on Twitter.
An Apple AirPods Max owner shared images of the potentially concerning issue, clearly showing water droplets inside the earbuds. They claim that the condensation problem caused “ear detection problems” and that the headphones had never been used in a humid environment.
The tweet resulted in a handful of other users reporting that they had experienced the exact same condensation issue when using Apple AirPods Max, albeit in different usage scenarios.
I had the exact same problem, with a light walk (40 minutes) and then again while watching a movie (1h30). I decided to return them after seeing that water was also getting inside the conductor and that the ring was turning red (or maybe I was overthinking it). Anyway, too worrying for meDecember 29, 2020
While it’s hard to tell if the problem is widespread, condensation tends to occur when hot air hits a cold surface. Apple AirPods Max are predominantly made of metal, and the earbuds often feel cool to the touch. So condensation is possible here and not on its plastic-coated rivals like the Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones.
It remains to be seen if more reports of condensation will appear now that Apple headphones are available worldwide and they will surely experience more weather conditions and use case scenarios. The good news is that we didn’t experience the problem ourselves during our time with high-end headphones.
Excelent sound
While we enjoyed the impressive audio performance of Apple’s first pair of on-ear headphones in our Apple AirPods Max review, the $ 550 / £ 549 / AU $ 899 price point, ineffective carrying case, and limited features from users of the Android means we would only recommend them to iOS users with lots of money to spare.
We reached out to Apple for comment to see if the company can help shed some light on the condensation issue and will update this story accordingly.
