Former Prime Minister of Somalia and aspiring president of Somalia, Hassan Khaire, continued his tour of Kenya by meeting with lawmakers from the Kenyan Somali community.
“I am honored to have a consultative meeting with Somali MPs and senators in Kenya today. I thank you for the good support of the Somali people,” tweeted former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Kheire.
“In the past, I have had constructive discussions with the Somali people that I met in the capital and with the President of our sister government of Djibouti, who has played and continues to play an important role in rebuilding our government.”
He reportedly asked them for a “hand” in his presidential bid, promising to improve relations between Kenya and Somalia should he take power.
“He said he had a series of reforms to the Somali economy that could be beneficial to both countries,” said Kenyan lawmaker Falhada Iman.
Kenyan Senator Falhada Deqow Iman apparently deleted the post from Facebook just minutes after she posted that former Somali Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire “asked Kenya to lend him a hand” to become the next president of Somalia.
Senator Iman released an apology saying the post did not capture what was discussed.
The former oil executive visited Djibouti and held talks with President Ismail Omar Guelleh shortly after announcing his candidacy for the presidency in the upcoming elections in Mogadishu.
It is also reported that Mr. Kheire will travel to Ethiopia after his visit from Kenya.
Khaire, who was ousted in July after Somalia MPs argued that he was impeding reforms, also vowed to find a “sustainable” solution to the Kenya-Somalia maritime border dispute.
The matter is currently before the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
