Slack released updated versions of its mobile apps for iOS and Android on Wednesday. The updates are based on the Slack desktop refresh in March, with the goal of making the user interface more intuitive and organized.
The highlights of the mobile update include new navigation icons at the bottom of the app and a new compose button that allows users to write, send and save messages faster. Slack also added swipe gestures to the mobile app. A swipe to the right allows users to view workspaces, and a swipe to the left allows them to view the last channel or direct message they were on.
“We recently released a significant update to the Slack design on desktop computers,” Slack said in a blog post. Parallel to our efforts on the desktop, we’ve been rethinking our mobile apps to make them easier to navigate and optimized for using Slack on the go: quickly catch up, reply to DMs and mentions, send messages, and get the job done with it. shortcuts feature. We will continue to incorporate what we learn through research and our network of Champions to make Slack even better for mobile devices, this redesign sets the stage for more improvements to come. “
Slack has been branded as a future recipient of work amidst domestic policy work due to the new coronavirus pandemic. Before the outbreak, CEO Stewart Butterfield said companies were standardizing on Slack and switching from email to channel-based messages. In October, Slack said it had 12 million DAUs on its platform, and also cited a “deep commitment” among those users as evidence of its significant market penetration and advantage over rival Microsoft teams.
As work from home orders went into effect in March, Slack said it had reached new user registrations for simultaneously connected users, defined as the number of people who are active on Slack at one time. Butterfield said that simultaneously connected users increased from 10.5 million on March 16 to 12.5 million on March 25. Slack hasn’t updated its DAU metric since October and continues to steer the conversation toward user engagement and this “simultaneously connected users” metric.
