Author and TV host Simon Reeve, 47, has become something of a travel documentary phenomenon, escaping the UK to venture across the globe, trying out new cultures and learning life lessons. But there was a moment that he would like to forget, yet it is one that will remain with him in his nightmares forever.
Reeve, who has made a name for himself by covering other people’s stories by creating travel documentaries for the BBC, traveled to Djibouti in East Africa.
But he found himself in a terrifying situation where he and his guide were held at gunpoint at a US military base after soldiers found “kalashnikov rounds” in his car, which were from a previous hunt.
In a recent interview, she recalled moments of uncertainty when she didn’t know what would happen next.
“The Americans went crazy!” he exclaimed.

Despite traveling the world, he experienced one of his true “lows” in Ethiopia, a memory that “will last” forever.
“Being in Ethiopia, having mothers who offered me their babies because they would have a better chance was a loss,” he recalled.
“That doesn’t go away, that lasts.
He continued saying Radio Times: “Seeing an old woman who looked like my grandmother begging at tables in Dushanbe in Tajikistan was a really moving experience.
“I never quite got over it, not that you should. I don’t want to toughen up.”
Reeve added, “Maybe I’m a little touched by the experiences.”
