The newly launched World of warcraft Expansion pack, Shadowlands, is the best-selling PC game of all time.
This is according to a new press release from developer Blizzard Entertainment, which revealed yesterday (December 8) that the game moved 3.7 million copies on launch day, November 23. The figure beats the previous record holder. Diablo III, another Blizzard IP, which sold 3.5 million copies when it was first released in 2012.
Blizzard Entertainment also noted that, in part due to lockdowns and social distancing measures stemming from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the number of players and engagement of World of warcraft in 2020 they have been significantly higher than in any previous period.
“In the months leading up to the expansion’s launch and the time since launch, the game reached and has maintained its highest number of players with monthly or long-term subscriptions compared to the same period before and after any Wow expansion in the last decade, both in the West and the East, ”said the developer.
However, as Engadget notes that the 3.7 million figure is likely based solely on paid games and does not include free titles or gifts. For example, earlier this year, the draw for Total War Saga: Troy On the Epic Games Store it was claimed by 7.5 million users in its first 24 hours.
World of Warcraft: Shadowland was released on November 23, a month after its planned release date of October 27. Blizzard Entertainment delayed the release of the title to early October, citing the need for “a little more time to polish it further.”
The developer previously released animated shorts based on the newly released expansion pack. Noble Beyond the Shadowlands, the four-episode series gave players a sneak peek at the ancient and mighty Covenants that rule the four new zones in Shadowlands.
