Addis Ababa – The bodies of seven teens were discovered in a church in the eastern Oromia region of Ethiopia, police officials said Monday.
“The teens were inside a room in the Church of San José that housed a generator,” Commander Aschalew Alemu, a spokesman for the East Shewa area police station, told the state news agency ENA.
Alemu said six men and a woman under the age of 20 had been discovered around 3 am (0000 GMT) on Sunday, shortly before the country celebrated Easter.
Ethiopia, which has the largest Orthodox Christian population outside of Europe, marked Easter on April 19.
“We are now investigating whether the suffocation of the generator is the cause of death,” he said, adding that 11 people had been arrested in connection with the deaths.
It is still unclear how the teens managed to enter the church.
Regulations for the state of emergency due to the coronavirus pandemic went into effect on April 10. Regulations have restricted the faithful to attend large church services to curb the spread of the virus. Security officers have been deployed around churches to implement these regulations.
