The United Arab Emirates announced on Saturday that it is paving a way for citizenship for select foreigners, in a move uncommon for the Gulf, where status and its welfare benefits are closely guarded.

“The UAE cabinet, local emir courts and executive councils will nominate those eligible for citizenship under clear criteria established for each category,” said Sheikh Mohammed. “The law allows UAE passport recipients to retain their current citizenship.”

The UAE government said the amendment to the citizenship law “aims to appreciate the talents and skills present in the UAE and attract brighter minds to the Emirati community.”
