White Ops is a bot prevention and fraud protection cybersecurity company that recently identified a large number of malicious Android apps. White Ops offers its cybersecurity services to companies and other websites to ensure that all their traffic is human. They achieve this by having a multi-layered defense that gathers, on average, 2,500 signals per interaction and it only takes one failed test for the threat to be flagged and blocked. They specialize in threat hunting, malware reverse engineering, and threat modeling so they can analyze and recognize new threats.
Their checks revealed that 240 Android apps were targeting users with irrelevant and out of context ads, while monitoring their phone usage with deceptive behavior that is not typical of innocent apps. These observations were made by the White Ops Satori Threat Intelligence and Investigation Team.
Satori’s team named the malicious ads RAINBOWMIX which pays tribute to the colorful retro games available for years that these apps emulate for download. RAINBOWMIX apps use out-of-context ads or ads that appear to come from famous, trusted, and trusted sources like YouTube, while in reality they come from malicious and untrustworthy developers. The way these apps can fly under Google’s radar is by using something called “packers.” This software packages the malicious code and hides the actual malicious coding and reduces it in size. Once the app is downloaded and the user grants it the permissions it needs, it “unzips” the actual encryption and spam the user with ads.
RAINBOWMIX apps at first appear to be legitimate and work as they are supposed to, acting as low-end Nintendo emulators and drawn from legitimate sources or appearing as low-quality games. The ads themselves too, as mentioned above, appear to be safe and from trustworthy companies. This allows scammers to bypass Google’s bot detection systems and get millions of downloads. Satori stated that these fraudulent ads led to more than fourteen million downloads and at their peak, fifteen million ad impressions each day. This is a great example of why people are working tirelessly to develop new methods and ways to bypass online security features and scam users into downloading low-quality and unwanted apps and games. The scammers also monitored when users turned their screen on or off so that they could better display the ads so that each time the user had their screen on, they would receive the maximum number of ads. This is something very surprising and terrifying to learn and to think that it could be happening to us or to someone in our family circle or friends is something very worrying against which we must take the strictest measures and in the fastest and most effective way possible.
