What is SBMM in Call of Duty? Let’s take a look at why skill-based matchmaking or SBMM is so controversial and why the pros are against it.
Treyarch Studios announced the exclusive release of PS4 Call of Duty: Cold War Alpha on September 17th. It’s a test as the game’s release date approaches. Fans and gamers, of course, were dying to try their luck and try the latest addition to the franchise. Initial reactions were quite positive, however certain professional Call of Duty players have voiced their opinions on the matchmaking service.
What is skill-based matching?
SBMM stands for Skill Based Match Making, it is a type of algorithm that puts people in pressure groups or similar skills. Many games have SBMM, in FPS games you are generally in ranked modes as a way to compete against others of similar abilities to earn a prestigious rank.
For what cause for concern?
The current consensus is that the game is being ruined by a skill-based algorithm that does not need to be in a public type of game, it is causing players to play less, leave the game longer, or simply stop playing altogether. Smurf accounts are also on the rise. Player stats don’t matter and stats are very important to the community. Players win more games, but there is a concern that they won’t improve after being consistently matched with players of similar skill level.
What the pros had to say about it:
Chicago Huntsmen SMG and Call of Duty legend Seth ‘Scump’ Abner said in a tweet that the SBMM was “crazy” and would like to be replaced. ROKKR Team Pro Gamer Fellow: Attach said he believes SBMM does not belong to CoD and would rather see a ranked playlist. Former CoD World Champion JKap echoed his words.
The SBMM in the Cold War is insane.

SBMM does not belong to CoD
Instead, give us a nice ranked playlist

Instead of ranked playlists, we will only get SBMM every year

SBMM does not belong to the causal Call of Duty playlists. You just need to be active in a separate ranked playlist.

With not even 2 days from launch, skill-based matchmaking is a controversial topic in this year’s Call of Duty. SBMM is very unpopular, but game studios don’t budge or include it in their games. After the uproar in the community, it remains to be seen how Treyarch responds.
