Samuel L. Jackson’s profanity-filled persona on Alexa’s voice assistant is becoming important [expletive deleted] empower.
The actor’s voice skill on Alexa, which Amazon introduced a year ago, is adding more than 30,000 new phrases to the platform with new jokes, roasts, stories and other content. By popular demand, that includes five times the amount of explicit content. And it’s getting the first celebrity “wake-up word” from Alexa, allowing customers to say “Hi Samuel” to invoke Jackson’s iconic baritone voice on Alexa-enabled devices.
As part of Jackson’s new repertoire on Alexa, if you ask “Hey Samuel, rotate me” you’ll get responses that include “Why the hell do you want to get grabbed? Do you really think you can handle that?” And “I’m going to ignore that request, because if he really roasted you, your pitiful ass will be destroyed on impact. “
Users can disable explicit mode in Jackson’s Alexa skill, which is priced at 99 cents. According to Amazon, 74% of customers who use the voice ability have profanity turned on. After the initial release, fans told the company that they wanted even more risque language.
For Amazon, boosting Jackson’s virtual voice on Alexa is designed to stimulate people to interact even more with the service and therefore increase the likelihood that they will use it to buy something from the e-commerce giant. Amazon Echo is the industry’s dominant smart speaker, with around 70% of the US smart speaker market, followed by Google devices with 32%, according to research firm eMarketer.
“Customers love having Samuel L. Jackson on their device, which is why we are so excited to launch our first celebrity alert message with Samuel L. Jackson, making it even easier for customers to access this great experience, “said Toni Reid. Amazon VP of Alexa Experience and Echo Devices.
Next year, Alexa will add more celebrities that you can swap for the generic synthesized female voice. In early 2021, Amazon plans to release Alexa voice skills for Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan and two “well-known American celebrities,” according to a representative.
In Alexa, Jackson is often cheerfully irritable. Saying “Hey Samuel, talk to me” can elicit the response: “What the hell do you want me to say?”
But he shows other faces of himself. Ask “Hi Samuel, what are you doing?” and one of his responses is: “I’m thinking of Chadwick Boseman and his family. He was a talented artist and a generous brother whose legacy will endure forever. I appreciate the memories it leaves for all of us. “He will also share that” I’m excited to be working with Ryan Reynolds again. We’re doing an animated series together, “referring to Quibi’s upcoming” Futha Mucka. “
Plus, Jackson’s Alexa voice will have new answers when you ask about the weather (“Look at that hot ball of gas and fire! No, no Really look “) or ask for a joke (” Why do Jedi always burn their pancakes? They never turn to the dark side “).
Note that Jackson didn’t have to sit in the recording studio to utter the thousands of new phrases for Alexa. Your virtual voice is synthesized using Amazon’s Neural Text-to-Speech technology, which replicates speech patterns after being “trained” by a set of a person’s voice recordings.
