Samsung is ready to hit back at Apple’s new iPhones, and seemingly much sooner than everyone expected.
SamMobile reports that Samsung is “accelerating production of the Galaxy S21 in an unprecedented way and may even be ready to announce it before the end of the year.” This would shake up the mobile industry and could cause many shoppers to rethink their Christmas upgrade plans.
Going into more detail, SamMobile explains that sources in Samsung’s home country of South Korea report that mass production of key components begins next month. The motivation for this accelerated launch is said to be a combination of the company’s low sales of the company’s flagships in 2020 and this low demand that subsequently frees up production lines, allowing Samsung to accelerate its plans.
It goes without saying that there is a fundamental difference between announcing a phone and when it goes on sale. So even if Samsung announces the successor to the Galaxy S20 (tentatively known as the Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S30), it may not arrive until the new year.
That said, from a business perspective, the launch around March of every annual Galaxy S flagship has always been weird. Not only does it mean that Samsung’s flagship has nine months to go when the crucial Christmas period rolls around, it also gives each new generation of Apple iPhones a relatively indisputable first 5-6 months on sale.
Also, given that the recently launched Galaxy Note 20 is Samsung’s worst premium smartphone in years, now would be a very good time for the company to turn things around.
