Its fate in the US may still be at stake, but TikTok’s business in other parts of the world remains strong and lucrative. In fact, it has partnered with other companies to help spread its service and name to devices beyond smartphones. In Europe, it has signed a juicy agreement with Samsung that will allow users of the brand to enjoy short video clips in a loop on smart TVs, giving it a kind of Netflix atmosphere.
There are only a few apps and services that seemed to be designed for smartphones and nothing else. Instagram, for example, always stayed away from even tablets due to its phone-centric nature. Although TikTok is almost similar, it is not afraid to spread its viral videos anywhere and everywhere.
Its latest expansion is in Samsung smart TVs, at least those sold in Europe. A new TikTok TV app will be available on all 2018 to 2020 models, excluding the rotating Sero which won’t get the app until next year. That almost seems ironic considering that the Sero can rotate in a portrait orientation to mimic a smartphone screen.
That being said, the TikTok TV experience isn’t exactly like the TikTok phone experience, and not just because you can’t really create videos from a smart TV. The app offers the usual “For You” and “Next” channels along with the rest of the TikTok library, organized into 12 categories. Users will be able to like or even comment on videos, assuming they are comfortable typing in their reaction with the Smart TV remote.
This follows the availability of another TikTok app, this time for Amazon Fire TV, last August. That app, however, offered curated content, while this version of the Samsung Smart TV offered an experience closer to the mobile app, without the camera, of course.
