Samsung Electronics overtook Apple in the US smartphone market in the third quarter of 2020. This was the first time the Korean smartphone giant beat Apple in a third quarter. It was largely attributed to the delay in the launch of the iPhone 12.
Samsung Electronics sold 10.4 million units, or 33.7 percent of the 30.8 million units sold in the US smartphone market. Samsung Electronics’ smartphone sales in the third quarter exceeded 10 million units for the first time since the first quarter of 2018. The company launched several next-generation strategic smartphone models, including the Galaxy Note 20 series and the Galaxy Z-Flip 5G. in August and the Galaxy Z-Fold 2 in September. Models that were released one after the other from April to August, including the A51, A51 5G and A71 5G, posted steady sales in the July-September period.
However, it will not be easy for Samsung Electronics to claim first place in the fourth quarter as sales of the newly launched iPhone 12 are increasing rapidly.
