If it was still not clear that Samsung is betting on folding, this news about its 2021 plans for the product line could dispel those doubts. That is, of course, if the reports that Samsung has no fewer than four foldable phones planned for next year are correct. Make no mistake though, despite that, we’ll only see two foldable form factors, suggesting that Samsung will replay the variant game as it has with its other smartphones.
In 2021, Samsung’s foldable line will still be made up of Fold and Flip shapes. Samsung seems to be more interested in refining what have been proven to be technologies that work rather than re-mixing things with a new factor, and for good reason. That said, it would give LG, OPPO, and even Xiaomi a chance to beat Samsung in the roll-up phone market next year.
That it has four flip phones planned for 2021 is curious and not surprising at the same time. We already expect there to be a Galaxy Z Fold 3 and a Galaxy Z Flip 2, which accounts for half that number. What the other two will be, however, is still a bit uncertain at this point.
ETNews practically says that Fold and Flip will have variants. The post doesn’t exactly differentiate between the two Galaxy Z Fold 3 models, except that one will have the rumored S Pen feature. Unlike this year’s Galax Z Flip, both models of the Galaxy Z Flip 2 will supposedly support 5G and will only differ in specifications and features.
That leaves room for one of the four to become the long-awaited and affordable “Lite” foldable. Perhaps even both will have their Lite versions, which could help the market to be more used to seeing these devices in the wild.
