Rocket League crosses the 1M mark one day after it was free to play

Rocket League has been perhaps one of the strangest games and, at the same time, one of the most popular out there. This soccer spin-off, where you play with cars instead of players, was destined to win hearts with its quirky concept.

The game received a significant boost to its gaming community since it became Free to Play on September 23. The game recently crossed a major milestone – it crossed one million concurrent in-game player traffic for the first time.

Corey Davis, Co-Studio Head of Psyonix, posted a tweet yesterday announcing this tremendous news.

The game had been made Free to Play once before on PlayStation, as a giveaway from PS Plus in 2016. It made record earnings in revenue and saw more than 5 million downloads. This time, the game saw these record numbers a day after it became Free to Play.

Now, this is a huge leap from the previous record this game has for the number of concurrent players, which is 119,124 (as of March 2020, per Steam charts). The game has been a huge success since its inception and sold 10.5 million copies in 2017.

In addition to making the game Free to Play, the game also received a major update yesterday. This introduced the game’s first Battle Pass, called ‘Rocket Pass’.

In addition to this, the developers introduced many weekly and seasonal challenges in the game and also introduced many cosmetic items in the in-game store.

Rocket League is now available for free on the Epic Games store

Epic Games acquired Psyonix Studio last year. As a result, the game was expected to be available for PC from Epic’s own store. Please note that the game is no longer available on any PC store other than the Epic Store.

Making the game free while featuring the ‘Rocket Pass’ is a really cool move for the game. While the game itself is free to play, the Battle Pass and various store items will keep the game’s transactions going. In a way, this could also be financially more beneficial.
