Bayern Munich forward Lewandowski eliminated competition from Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to be crowned the best male player.
The forward has been in terrifying form for the past year, scoring 55 goals and shooting Bayern Munich to an impressive hat-trick last season.
He was widely inclined to win the Ballon d’Or this year before he was ruled out amid the pandemic.
“This award also belongs to my teammates, the coach and Bayern Munich in general. It is an incredible feeling, a lot of emotions,” he said.
“If you win such an award and you share that title with Messi and Ronaldo, it’s amazing and it means a lot to me. A long time ago, I remember yearning for something like this and now I can win such an award.”
‘I will remember this moment’
Manchester City’s Bronze was named the best player of the year, becoming the first defender to do so.
Bronze won the league title, national cup and Champions League with Lyon last year before returning to England at the start of the new season.
The English international beat Chelsea’s Pernille Harder and Lyon’s Wendie Renard for the award.
“What a surprise. Even to be nominated along with the other two players, they are both amazing players and outstanding human beings,” Bronze said in a video call.
“I don’t think I have the words right now to explain how I feel. If there is one thing 2020 has taught us, it is to appreciate every moment you have, never look too far ahead and live in the heart and now.” she said. “I will appreciate winning this award now more than ever, and I will remember this moment for the rest of my life.”
The awards recognize achievements between July 20, 2019 and October 7, 2020. Voting is divided between team captains, national team coaches, fans, and 200 journalists.
Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp was named the best men’s manager of the year after leading Liverpool to their first league title in 30 years last season, with a club-record total of 99 points.
He beat Bayern Munich manager Hans-Dieter Flick and Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa for the award.
Flick was expected by many to take the title after leading Bayern to victory in the Bundesliga, the Champions League, the German Cup, the German Super Cup and the UEFA Super Cup last year.
Dutch coach Sarina Wiegman won the award for best female coach after transforming the fortunes of the national team since the 2019 World Cup, overseeing a 10-match unbeaten streak.
Furthermore, Bayern’s Manuel Neuer was crowned the best male goalkeeper, while Lyon’s Sarah Bouhaddi took home the best female goalkeeper award.
