Richarlison has defended Edinson Cavani after the The Manchester United striker received a red card in Uruguay’s loss to Brazil, although he admits the challenge could have been much more serious.
The former PSG leader entered Richarlison late during Tuesday night’s clash in Montevideo, grabbed his ankle with his studs and was initially shown only a yellow card.
But the VAR felt the challenge deserved a red card and encouraged the referee to improve his punishment, with an astonished Cavani given his marching orders at the end of the match.
Richarlison, who scored the Selecao’s second goal in the 2-0 win, felt sympathy for Cavani afterward and doesn’t think he meant to hurt him, although he felt the challenge was dangerous.
“It was a ball fight and of course he went out of line,” the Everton star told CBF TV after the game.
“ If my foot was planted there on the floor, maybe I could even have broken my ankle.
But I don’t think he meant it. I think he went to get the ball, but he missed and took my foot off. It’s a normal game situation. ‘
Richarlison had scored from an excellent corner routine on the brink of halftime, adding to Arthur’s first goal, and the victory holds Brazil’s record of 100% in World Cup qualification thus far.
Talking about his performance, Richarlison added: ‘From the moment I step onto the field, it’s to honor the jersey. I hope I am doing a good job.
‘I have a lot to evolve in the national team, but I feel like I’m evolving every day. In these great games we tend to grow bigger. I have everything to make a beautiful story with the national team jersey.
‘Against Venezuela, which was a defensive team, Tite wanted a man who could find space. Today I was able to play to the limit, which is like a match at Everton. I don’t see any difference and I’ll be available to do whatever Tite prefers.
